Neodymium magnets are reputed to be strong kinds of magnets. People who have experimented on it have tried putting one in their pocket and walking past a refrigerator find their pockets getting pulled by the fridge. That’s how strong these magnets are. One of these magnets alone has the capacity to hold a phone book that is medium in thickness to a filing cabinet made of steel. These magnets have also known to even attract money, as in paper bills, as they have traces of iron in them. As a precaution, these magnets have to be kept away from computer disks, credit cards, video tapes and anything valuable. There are also a number of these kinds of magnets that are small, so they can be choking hazards to toddlers. Thus, they have to be stored in a safe place.

Aside from neodymium, which is a rare earth metal, a neodymium magnet also contains boron and iron. With these elements presents, this type of magnet is considered strongest in the world. While all magnets are known to create a magnetic field containing both a north and south pole, the one created by this kind of magnet is strong that it can line up, matching the earth’s magnetic north and south. Thus, this kind of magnet is ideal in compasses. The power of this kind of magnet though, should not be taken lightly, especially when they are large. If they are only inches apart, two magnets of this kind with opposite poles can topple anything in between them because of their attraction. Magnetic media has to be kept away from large magnets of this kind.

Neodymium magnets, as much as they are useful for industrial functions, can also be used for curious discoveries. Small varieties can be used to display, especially to children, various scientific concepts such as friction, magnetic poles and magnetic fields.
